It’s not enough these days for BMW to equip its vehicles with an all-wheel drive system that ensures traction in slippery conditions. With BMW’s intelligent xDrive system, you can expect an experience that ensures traction in foul weather in addition to superior drivability and handling. Here’s a look at what makes BMW xDrive so innovative:
Intelligent All-Wheel Drive
By using dynamic stability control (DSC) sensors, a BMW equipped with xDrive can assess the current road conditions, within a tenth of a second, and decide how power should be distributed between the front and rear axles for optimal traction. This is more efficient than a full-time 4WD, which doesn’t adjust torque bias to react to slippage.
Better Handling Experience
BMW xDrive contains the advantages that you are accustomed to in a rear-wheel drive BMW, like attentive handling, skillful cornering, and balanced acceleration by maintaining a 40:60 ratio between the front and rear axles. This ratio, in addition to an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, gives the xDrive an ability to counter over- or understeering and provide an unbeatable feeling of control.
Increased Traction
Unlike other systems, which simply activate the rear axle when slippery conditions render the front wheels ineffective, BMW xDrive can distribute up to 100% of the engine’s power to the front or rear axle within milliseconds of detecting slippage. In addition to DSC, BMW xDrive is also connected to the vehicle’s anti-lock braking system (ABS) and traction control system (TCS) to offer a truly intelligent all-wheel drive system.
Available on the 3-Series, 5-Series, 7-Series, X1, X3, X5, and X6 models, xDrive is ready for a test run at Dave Walter BMW. Call us at (234) 542-3565 to learn more about this innovative system.

BMW, standing for Bavarian Motor Works, is the world’s leading manufacturer of luxury sports cars based in Munich, Germany. To fully understand BMW’s commitment to sporty refinement, read below for a brief history of BMW’s interesting and transformative past:
Early Beginnings
Beginning as a manufacturer of aircraft in the early 1910s, BMW designed a logo that is still used today: white propeller blades against a blue sky. It wasn’t until 1928 that BMW produced its first automobile, the Dixi. The car sold extremely well, which pushed the company through the Depression. Before WWII, BMW built its enormously successful 328 roadster, a 2-seater that accumulated over 120 racing victories between 1936 and 1940.
Post-War Refinement
BMW’s 501 sedan, a spacious sedan with eye-catching design, launched BMW into the 1950s with great force. It was followed by the 502 sedan, which featured the first light-alloy V8 engine ever made. The popularity of these vehicles, as well as the lightweight 507 sports car, confidently pushed BMW into the 1960s.
Advancements in Technology
The 1960s and 1970s saw BMWs that were technologically more advanced than ever before, especially with regards to vehicle electronics and turbochargers. As a fully developed and established car company, BMW now had a dynamic range of vehicles to offer: the BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series. At this time BMW also created the renowned performance M division.
International Expansion & Success
BMW of North America, established in the 1970s, was followed some 20 years later by BMW’s first U.S. production plant. In the late 1990s, BMW purchased Mini and Rolls Royce. Today, BMW sedans, coupes, wagons, and SUVs offer an engaging driving experience that simply can’t be compared to the offerings of any other automaker.
